Do you have sensitive skin?
Almost half of all people say they have sensitive skin that causes a feeling of tightness, dryness, itching, burning and redness.1-3
Sensitive skin is caused by nerve endings in the top layer of the skin that become irritated. This often happens when the skin’s protective barrier is damaged, allowing irritants and allergens to enter the skin and cause inflammation.3
Triggers that can cause sensitive skin include:3
Pollution
Stress
Fluctuating hormones
Temperature changes
Smoking
Alcohol
Diet
Cosmetic and/or medical procedures
Cosmetics and soaps
Chemical and/or synthetic fragrances and dyes
Sensitive skin can appear anywhere on the body, but it is most visible on the face. Exposure to the sun and certain ingredients in cosmetics and cleansers can worsen symptoms.

Gently pat skin dry – don’t rub.
Don’t use scrubs or washcloths.
The AVEENO® ULTRA CALMING® Foaming Cleanser is specially designed for sensitive skin with calming feverfew and nourishing oat. Gently cleanse and hydrate without compromising the skin’s delicate moisture barrier.

For best results, apply facial and body moisturizers to damp skin, like the AVEENO® ULTRA-CALMING® Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 and AVEENO® Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion, within minutes of taking a bath or shower.
Apply any special medications that you have been prescribed first and then generously apply moisturizer. After applying some medications, you may be advised to wait 15-20 minutes before applying moisturizer. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
When outside, wear a hat, cover your legs and arms, and use a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen for sensitive skin. Lifestyle changes may help protect your skin
Detox
Get rid of personal care items that contain chemical and environmental irritants. Also shop for options when choosing laundry detergents, household cleaners and even paint that are free of irritants.
Be wary of bacteria
Keep the bacteria count down by replacing your washcloth and pillowcase often. You should also throw out old makeup and cosmetic products. Wash your makeup brushes often and let them air dry.
Test new products before using them
When you’re trying a new product, it’s a good idea to test it on your wrist, arm, or behind an ear before putting it on your face or all over your body.
Avoid your triggers
Harsh soaps, alcohols, chemicals and fragrances are sensitive skin triggers that you should try to avoid. Read the labels on your skin care products.
Use a humidifier
Unless you live in a humid climate, a humidifier can help your skin stay moisturized.
Manage stress and establish a healthy sleep schedule
Stress and sleep are significant lifestyle factors that can affect skin health.
Could it be more than sensitive skin?
Rosacea, eczema, and allergic contact dermatitis are commonly mistaken for sensitive skin. Talk to your dermatologist to find out what may be causing your problem and develop a treatment plan to get and keep your skin clear.
